H.O.L.A.
Hands-on Outdoor Learning Adventure
In the last year, we have expanded our programming
from just out-of-school time to in-school. This growth was based
on the knowledge that children could benefit from experiential learning
of science while engaging in their local environment. It also expands
our potential to reach more youth, while developing partnerships
with New Haen Public Schools.
The HOLA Program is an in-school environmental
education program that provides opportunities for students in the
3rd and 4th grade to engage in in-depth explorations, facilitating
an understanding of science as it relates to personal, social and
global issues. The HOLA curriculum supports the new Connecticut
Core Science Curriculum Framework, targeting specific Content Standards
and Expected Performances, through hands-on, inquiry-based learning
in the out-of-doors.
HOLA follows SOLAR YOUTH’S model of Kids EXPLORE!
Kids DO! Kids TEACH!. It allows youth to investigate the local ecology
of New Haven, discover what they can do mitigate environmental problems,
and teach others in the community what they have learned.
During the 2005-2006 school year, Solar Youth partnered
with two New Haven Public Schools: Barnard Environmental Magnet
and MicroSociety Magnet. Each participating class takes part in
a three-hour, hands-on lesson once per month. Topics are selected
in collaboration with teachers, so that it supports their classroom
goals.
Stay tuned for the outcomes of our spring 2005 season!
