CITYWIDE STEWARD PROGRAM

During the summer, members of the after-school Neighborhood Steward Teams and new youth join together for five weeks. Following our program model, youth learned about and explored the city ecosystem (Kids Explore!), identified and addressed problems by doing C-SAP’s - community service action projects (Kids Do!) and taught what they learned and accomplished to others (Kids Teach!).

KIDS DO!

"C-SAP stands for Community Service Action Project. The
first thing we do is explore the community to identify problems. Next we choose a problem and research the problem. Then we brainstorm solutions and choose a solution. After, we develop an action plan then we take action. After that we evaluate, which means see how we did.”

C-SAP at Dover Beach on the Quinnipiac River
Storm Drain Stenciling
“Do Not Dump! Drains into Long Island Sound”

One of the C-SAP’s we did was at Criscuolo Park, near the Quinnipiac River. [We] dug in the dirt and moved heavy rocks to get a coat from the ground. We didn’t stop until we got it out... We also found chip bags, styrophome, and a lot of fishing line. After we went looking for crabs. The parks was clean and we felt good.”

KIDS TEACH

Guerilla Theatre
The group decided they wanted to TEACH others about the effect of litter on the environment and our community. They wrote a skit which was performed at noon on the downtown New Haven Green. They also canvased the Green to have people sign an Anti-Litter Pledge.

"This summer was full of
adventure. We did things like hiking, clean-up our community, and just for fun trips. One of the things I won’t forget was our trip to Six Flags New England. It was fun with the rides that we got to pick ourselves. Half of the day it rained really hard. But I knew all about the rain and the cycle it goes through. We wrote a little song about it, using words like evaporation (when water vapor rises into the sky), condensation (when clouds aremade),precipitation (rain, sleet, snow and hail), run-off (when the water flows along the surface of the ground)and infiltration (when water soaks into the ground).”
